How We Research
Every guide here starts with one question: will this fireplace work on your wall, in your room? Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with the space
A fireplace for a living room wall, a bedroom or an old brick firebox are three different shopping jobs.
We look at the width, height and depth of each unit and what the maker says about the opening or stud space it needs. We also note where the cord and controls sit.
2. We compare specs and features
We check the size, depth, wattage, heating coverage, flame and ember options, remote or app control, thermostat and timer, noise and what comes in the box.
Makers describe their products in their own words. We name the brand for every claim, such as "R.W.FLAME says" or "Touchstone lists".
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read through what buyers report after using a unit. We look for patterns, like dim flames, loud fans, tight fits in the opening, or glass that arrives scratched.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A fireplace that is great for a 60 inch TV wall may score lower in a guide about small inserts.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages current
Models change, and some disappear from stores. Many fireplaces share near-identical looks across brands, so we check each model before we link it and we only link new units.
We skip any product with a known recall and any listing for a used or renewed unit. When we change a guide in a real way, its "Updated on" date changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every fireplace we cover.
An electric fireplace is a heater. Follow the maker's manual for clearances, outlets and mounting, and use a licensed electrician for any hard-wired unit.
Our pages give general information, not electrical, building or safety advice.
